Do Small Businesses Need a Marketing Agency?

Small business owner reviewing marketing agency reports and invoices, questioning whether they are seeing real results
Short answer: Probably not. Most small businesses do not need a marketing agency. What they usually need is someone to find the one or two things that are actually costing them customers, and fix those first.

In two sentences

Marketing agencies sell packages of activity, but activity and outcomes are not the same thing. Most small businesses get better results by diagnosing the specific leaks in their customer supply line and fixing those, rather than paying a monthly retainer for broad marketing work.

Deep dive

The most common feedback from business owners who have left a marketing agency is: “I did not really see any results for the money we were spending.” The agency can point to reports, website changes, and social media activity. The owner cannot point to a growing bottom line.

This is because most agencies are built around activity, not outcomes. They will post on your social media, redesign your website, and send you monthly reports. What they skirt around is what the results will actually look like. It is like handing out generic medication and hoping it works because it worked for someone else. No diagnosis. No examination.

The other common frustration is scope. Many owners have one specific problem they want fixed, but the agency wants to sell the full package. The owner just wanted someone to stop leads slipping through at 7pm on a Tuesday. The agency wants a 12-month retainer covering everything.

What to do instead

Most small business owners are not marketers by choice. They are good at a thing (plumbing, landscape gardening, mortgage advice) and ended up having to do marketing. The answer is not more marketing activity. It is fixing the weak spots in how they get new customers:

  • Speed: If a lead comes in at 8pm and does not get answered until the next morning, that lead is probably lost.
  • Proof: If they do a great job but never ask for a review, they are missing out on their own customers being their best marketing.
  • Follow-up: If quotes go out and nobody chases when it goes quiet, that is revenue walking out the back door.

None of that is “marketing” in the way an agency would sell it. It is fixing the leaks in the pipe between “someone finds you” and “someone pays you.”

If your business is getting enquiries but too many are going cold, this article on getting enquiries but not customers explains why follow-up is often the real issue.
